It’s 8:30 AM and I am waiting for the car in front of me to start moving, and it’s fair to say both myself and my passenger, Bob Roberts, are full of anticipation. We’re on deck 7 of the Hull Rotterdam ferry and ahead of us two days in search of big perch. Some months ago I’d been told of a top guide in Holland, Rob Kraaijeveld, and after chatting with Bob I’d booked two days. We’d done our research on the area, corresponded with Rob, anxiously watched the long term weather forecast and at last it was time to go, if only the car in front would start moving!

I knew it was good news when it was announced that the 2018 qualifier for the World Club Feeder Championships would be on the Gloucester Canal. Two reasons really: firstly, it’s good to keep up the canal’s profile and availability for these events; secondly, I knew we would have a chance of winning it whatever the competition we were faced with. I am also in a privileged position in as much as I fished a World Club Float Championship in the Czech Republic in 2000 and I know it’s a once in a lifetime experience, so I was excited that other younger members of the Daiwa Gordon League squad could also share that opportunity.

Ashmead has to be one of the most atmospheric carp waters in the country and I have some wonderful memories of sessions spent there. It’s not the easiest water I’ve ever fished and by no stretch of the imagination would I call it a runs water, but the rewards can be very special. When I go to Ashmead, I know I’m going to be in good company with idyllic surroundings but catching will require that I work hard and have luck on my side.

Daiwa Gordon League manager Mark Treasure reports back after a busy weekend of team events! It’s been a period of hectic activity for Daiwa Gordon League, culminating in the Division 1 National Championships on the River Trent near Nottingham last Saturday and the final round of the South West Super league on the Bristol Avon at Newbridge last Sunday. For the national we learnt a long time ago that rivers are very rarely method waters, so for us practice takes the form of a recce really, find your way around, get a few rigs right and then pick an experienced team for the match itself.

I locked the gate, returned to the car and sat for a second. Two thoughts crossed my mind, one I was shattered and two what a fabulous day I’d just had. I’d been invited by Gary Wright, Junior Section Leader, for Nottingham Piscatorial Society to join them for their first Junior Carp Academy and it’s fair to say it had gone well, writes Daiwa consultant Brian Skoyles.
