Daiwa consultant takes top honours afloat

A fantastic haul of 20 thornback and spotted rays, 8 dabs and 2 plaice secured victory in the Highlands and Islands Open Boat Championships for Daiwa sea consultant Steve Souter.
Commodore of Stornoway Sea Angling Club, Aga Urquart presents Steve with the winner’s envelope.

Fished out from the port of Carloway on the West side of the Isle of Lewis, the charter boat event attracted competition boat anglers from all over the country.

Only rays and flatfish counted under the competition rules, and perhaps surprisingly considering the target species, all fishing was done on the drift. Steve said: “Normally this sort of fishing is done at anchor, and there’s a bit of a knack to catching rays on the drift, but it takes a bit of getting your head around”.

Steve’s bumper 154 points total took top spot on Nimrod, with veteran angler Graham Forbes topping SYSAC 2 with 100 points to take overall second place. Local rod Gordon Mackenzie recorded the best score on Rebecca Ann with 96 points for 3rd.
