Gone Dutch

Neville Fickling reports back on a successful week’s pike fishing in Holland, with fish to 24lb 8oz coming his way.

For a couple of years I had promised to go back to Holland to have a go for the pike and zander that abound in this densely populated country. Last year’s trip was unfortunately cancelled because there was solid ice on the waters I wanted to fish, so this year I tried again along with Duncan Pritchard.

The fact that the ferry was 8 hours late getting out there didn’t help matters but the next day we were out fishing. I’d had a few days on the water two years previously with the daftest piker I know Gord Burton and trolling deep running lures looked a good approach. So that is what Duncan and I did.

By the end of the week we had both caught pike of twenty four pounds (mine was 8oz bigger than his!) and we had about 30 pike in all. We didn’t catch any zander, only a few small perch on jigs. However we are going back next year for another go. We have only just started to find our way around some of the big Dutch waters. It’s a project that will take time!
