Kevin’s Day

A host of top anglers made the trip to Lemington Lakes recently, as part of a tribute day in honour of the former editor of Improve Your Coarse Fishing and angling TV presenter Kevin Green who tragically died last year. Daiwa consultant Brian Skoyles was one of the organisers of the event and he had this to say about the day.

“I cannot remember ever seeing so many top anglers fishing together at the same time”, was one of the comments made about Kevin’s Day. There was over 30 well known anglers fishing across the complex for members of the public to meet and chat too, as well as getting the chance to watch them fish.

When I was asked to get involved in organising the day I said yes immediately. Kevin was a close friend and a top angling writer and presenter. My part in the event was to ask well known anglers to attend the tribute day, and it was remarkable how easy it was. The usual answer went something like. If it’s for Kev, count me in! I can think of very few other angling personalities that have commanded such universal respect both within the trade and with the general public.

The event took place on the 14th August at the stunning Cotswold’s complex. A steady stream of anglers arrived from 7-00 a.m. and everything was ready for a 9-00 a.m. opening. The weather was generally kind, the odd shower in the morning, but overall lovely conditions for a spot of fun fishing or just wandering around watching.

There were anglers fishing on Sunset Lake for tench, Abbey Lake for mixed species, Bishops Lake for specimen carp and Westminster Lake also for carp. All the lakes produced and it was brilliant to watch so many top anglers in action. Not just fishing but also sharing stories of working with Kevin in Angling Times, Improve Your Coarse Fishing or on TV.

The ATA (Angling Trades Association) had arranged for four angling coaches to be part of the day and one of the highlights had to be when Reuben, Kevin’s older son, not quite 5 years old,  got to fish for the first time and caught his first ever fish. It was a lovely moment, one we all thought that Kevin would very much have approved of.

A  big thank you must go to Andy and Debbie Machin owners of Lemington Lakes for the use of their stunning venue and the constant supply of refreshments and to Andrew Ellis who was also instrumental in helping to organise the day. I think it’s also worth mentioning that from the start it was decided that all income from the day would go to charity so we will be sending a donation of £1100 to Kevin’s chosen charity “The British Legion”.

Late afternoon, as people left, so many commented on what a great day they had had. How they had been struck by the overall atmosphere, not just the opportunity to watch so many great anglers in action but how much all those fishing were enjoying the chance to just relax and fish for the day.  Again, we are sure Kevin would have fully approved!
