Caught in the Act

A trip to a Lincolnshire drain saw Bob Roberts successfully land this cracking pike while filming for his new DVD series, 'Caught in the Act’.

“In the new DVD’s we will be targeting a wide variety of species including a few exotic ones in faraway places. The pike footage includes some cracking fish taken on river, canal and drain, so far” explained Bob.

“When we sat down to map out a schedule for all the filming we’re hoping to do this year we feared the piking section would possibly be a little tricky. The harsh winter and unpredictable conditions might have made for a difficult challenge.”

“To give us the best possible chance of some action we spent the day leapfrogging rods along the drain, giving it 20 minutes in each spot. The fish above was something like the 20th swim we'd tried. It is hard work but the rewards make the effort worthwhile. Several other anglers stayed put all day in what they saw as good swims and they all blanked. In total we had four pike, and they all came on the first cast in a new swim.”

Bob landed the pike using Daiwa Mission rods and Tournament Linear reels loaded with 15lb Sensor Clear monofil. Bait-wise a lamprey section was fished almost freelined with just a couple of split shot on the trace in the near margin.

The pike follows on from a successful few weeks on the rivers for Bob, with a number of good chub and his first barbel of 2011 gracing his landing net.
