Fishing from Clevedon pier in North Somerset, Darren tempted the specimen with a squid and sand eel cocktail bait. This was fished using an up and over clip down running ledger rig with a Daiwa Supercast 12’ multiplier rod and Sealine SL30SH reel.
“Both the rod and reel were fantastic. The rod took the strain of the weight of the ray with ease, although due to the size and fight of the ray it took me 15 minutes to reel in and land” explained Darren.
The small eyed ray is generally found in the English Channel and south west of England and Ireland, with the average size between 5 and 10lb, and the UK record standing at 17lb 8oz.
