John Dory Scottish Record caught on all Daiwa gear

Graham Forbes from Inverness landed an unexpected catch while fishing the Western Isles Boat Championship off the Isle of Lewis.

He was presenting mackerel strip in 50 to 60 metres of water when he connected with a modest sized fish that turned out to be a bit of prize itself.

The unmistakable colour and shape of a John Dory came to the surface and Graham was pleasantly surprised. Witnessed by others including winner of the event, Daiwa consultant, Steve Souter the fish was later weighed at 2lb 6oz and 12 drams. Small to some but a Scottish record for sure.

Graham has been a fan of Daiwa gear for many years and his choice of kit that day was a Team Daiwa 12/30 boat rod and Emblem S fixed spool. However one item he used that he now places great value upon its performance when boat fishing is Tournament Accudepth braid. Graham explained “Without doubt this braid gives me an advantage in competition and gets me back to the feeding zone quicker and accurately. It catches me more fish.”

The John Dory (Zues Faber) is regarded as an excellent fish for eating and various explanations are given as the origin of the name. The more popular notion is it may be that "John" derives from the French jaune, yellow and that a variation of dory is from the French dorée, meaning gilded or indeed d’or meaning golden.
