Nick takes up the story of his amazing catch,
“I was bass plugging on the North coast of Cornwall with my friend, fishing from the rocks at a location not far from the Devon/Cornwall border. I was using a Daiwa Saltiga Minow FG sub surface lure. I had been using Saltigas for the previous 2 months - during which time my fortunes seemed to change as they really are excellent lures.
When I hooked the fish I initially thought I had hooked my first 5 lb bass from the shore as the fished punched well above its weight. After catching the fish my friend recognised it to be some form of Jack and suggested I get it identified.
Following advice from the National Federation of Sea Anglers (NFSA) I had the fish weighed on calibrated scales and subsequently took it to the National Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. It was examined by a Dr Martin Genner who identified it as a Crevalle Jack. Dr Genner took DNA samples of the fish for further tests. Following involvement by Doug Herdson of the National Marine Aquarium it transpired that there are sub species of Crevalle Jacks. It was therefore necessary for Dr Genner to make a further examination of the fish to confirm that it is in fact a Crevalle Jack (Caranx Hippos) blue runner.
This fish has been weighed at 1.160 kgs and I am informed that it will qualify for a British record. I have already submitted the appropriate papers etc.”
