For me the World Pairs is the most important competition of the year after the World Feeder Championships. It will be the fourth time for me to fish this great event and Thorsten’s second.

Well we are now rapidly approaching one of my favourite weeks of the year in the form of the world pairs in Ireland! It’s a competition that has been kind to myself and brother Phil in the past with a win, two seconds and a third in the four years we have competed.

With the World Pairs just around the corner, my preparation for the match is in full swing, (well it was until I was asked to write this). Joking aside, you’d think that a festival using so many different venues would require a huge amount of diverse tackle, but thankfully this is not the case.

Heading south, down the motorway, sipping out of a takeaway coffee cup at 4am might not appeal to some, but I was meeting up with Brian Skoyles for a two day carp session and I was loving it!

I hadn’t intended to spend much time on the River Trent early season, but Bob Roberts, Alfie Naylor and myself had had such a great June 16th that as I drove away any thoughts of getting onto my carp syndicate lake were being overtaken by when could I get back on the Trent? Alfie’s hard work and local knowledge had produced the goods, it seemed daft to not make the most of the opportunity we had, a second visit to the pre-baited area was called for, writes Daiwa Consultant Brian Skoyles.

Bob Roberts and I were stood on the Daiwa stand at the Northern Angling Show. During a lull in talking about rods and reels we got into conversation with an angler, Alfie Naylor, about his catches on the River Trent. Very big chub were mentioned which immediately got Bob’s undivided attention, followed by tales of hard fighting carp which did exactly the same for me, writes Daiwa consultant Brian Skoyles.

Over the past 12 years I have travelled many times to the foothills of the Himalayas in Northern India trying to catch the elusive Himalayan Golden Mahseer. Fishing for Mahseer is not easy, it’s a bit like Salmon fishing; you have to be in the right spot at the right time.
